How I Make a Difference: Improving Myself and My Community

Make a Difference Student Essay First Place Winner: JaQuae Johnson, Premier High School

On November 7, 1912, Theodore Roosevelt said, “This country will not be a good place for any of us to live in unless we make it a good place for all of us to live in.”  This quote is saying that this country can be great if everyone works together to make it great.

It is important to me to live in a safe, nice community. This requires that I am a part of making it that way. In my opinion, the way I make a difference in my community is by staying out of trouble and becoming a productive citizen.

There are a lot of ways to get into trouble.

Young Black men in my community sometimes end up in jail or dead by staying in the streets. Sometimes, they also struggle with drugs or the many consequences of being involved with a gang. To make a difference in my community, I actively avoid these things. If I want to make a difference in my community, I have to be here to be a part of it.

There are several things that I do to make a difference in my community. I volunteer at my school.  Volunteering at school improves the community by creating a more connected, stronger school community. It also directly supports my success through mentoring from staff. If I am better, my community is better.

I choose to stay in school and work hard. My education is leading me to success. With hard work in high school, I can go to college. With a college education, I can get a good job. I can work to make real improvements in my community. I can improve my community by improving myself.

Another way I make a difference in my community is by helping my mom around the house with chores. My mom is hard working, who works to improve the community. Helping her helps the community.  I help with picking things up and putting them in their spots. If our house is looking cluttered, I help straighten it up. If there are dishes, I’ll help my mom out by washing them. I also can clean the bathroom and take out the trash, so that when she comes home from work,  she won’t have to do it herself.

I make a difference in my community by supporting my family and trying to make life easier for them.

Volunteering at my school and working hard on my education can lead to college and a good job.  If I am successful, I can make an even greater impact on my community. To paraphrase Theodore Roosevelt, “My community will not be a good place for any of us to live unless I try to make it a good place for all of us to live.”  My community can change as a direct result of my actions and choices.
